How an Asian handicap works
A 1X2 bet on football has three outcomes: home win, draw or away win. An Asian handicap gives one team a start in goals, so the match becomes a contest between two sides. The stronger team gives the start and carries a minus line, such as -1. The weaker team receives it and carries the matching plus line, +1.
To settle the bet, add your line to your team's goals at the final whistle, then compare that adjusted score with the other team's real score. Ahead means your bet wins, behind means it loses, and level means your stake is returned.
Say Team A plays Team B and you back A at -1. The match ends 2–0. Take one goal off A and the adjusted score is 1–0, so your bet wins. Had the match ended 1–0, the adjusted score would be 0–0 and you would get your stake back.
Football handicap bets are normally settled on the score at the end of normal time, including stoppage time, without extra time or penalties. The market rules confirm what counts for each bet. On TPOWER you place handicap bets through SBOBET or MAXBET in the sportsbook.
The five ways a handicap bet can end
Every Asian handicap bet ends in one of five results. For illustration, say you stake RM100 at decimal odds of 1.90, which is 0.90 in Hong Kong or Malay odds:
- Win: RM90 profit, so RM190 comes back to you.
- Half win: half the stake wins and half is returned: RM45 profit, RM145 back.
- Push: the whole stake is returned: RM100 back, no profit and no loss.
- Half loss: half the stake loses and half is returned: RM50 back, a loss of RM50.
- Loss: the whole RM100 is lost.
The arithmetic is short. A win pays the stake × (decimal odds - 1). A half win pays half the stake × (decimal odds - 1). Half wins and half losses only happen on quarter lines, explained below. If you read prices in another format, how to read betting odds shows how to convert them.
Level ball: the 0 line
Level ball gives neither team a start. It tends to appear when two teams look evenly matched, and a draw simply returns your stake.
Team A at 0, RM100 at 1.90
- A wins by any score: win, RM90 profit.
- Draw: push, RM100 returned.
- A loses: loss of RM100.
Half-goal lines: -0.5, +0.5 and -1.5
No team can score half a goal, so on these lines the adjusted score is never level. A half-goal bet always ends as a full win or a full loss.
-0.5 and +0.5
At -0.5 your team must win the match, by any margin. At +0.5 your team only has to avoid defeat: a win and a draw both count.
Team A -0.5, RM100 at 1.90
- A wins: win, RM90 profit.
- Draw or A loses: loss of RM100.
Team B +0.5, RM100 at 1.90
- B wins or draws: win, RM90 profit.
- B loses: loss of RM100.
-1.5 and +1.5
At -1.5 the favourite must win by two goals or more. At +1.5 a bet on the underdog wins if it wins, draws or loses by one goal.
Team A -1.5, RM100 at 1.90
- A wins by 2 or more: win, RM90 profit.
- A wins by 1, draws or loses: loss of RM100.
Team B +1.5, RM100 at 1.90
- B wins, draws or loses by 1: win, RM90 profit.
- B loses by 2 or more: loss of RM100.
The pattern continues at -2.5, -3.5 and beyond. The favourite must win by one goal more than the whole number in the line: by three goals at -2.5, by four at -3.5.
Whole-goal lines: -1, +1 and the push
On a whole-goal line the adjusted score can finish level. When it does, the bet is a push and your stake comes back.
Team A -1, RM100 at 1.90
- A wins by 2 or more: win, RM90 profit.
- A wins by exactly 1: push, RM100 returned.
- Draw or A loses: loss of RM100.
Team B +1, RM100 at 1.90
- B wins or draws: win, RM90 profit.
- B loses by exactly 1: push, RM100 returned.
- B loses by 2 or more: loss of RM100.
At -2 the push moves to a two-goal win: A must win by three to win the bet, and a one-goal win, a draw or a defeat loses. A -1 line risks less than -1.5, because a one-goal win is refunded rather than lost, and asks more than -0.5, so its price usually sits between the two.
Quarter lines: the split stake
Quarter lines sit between a half line and a whole line: -0.25, -0.75, -1.25, +0.25, +0.75 and so on. Some sportsbooks write them as the pair of lines they combine, such as 0/0.5 or 0.5/1.
A quarter-line bet is two bets in one. Your stake is split in half: one half goes on the line just below and the other on the line just above. Each half settles on its own, and you add the results together.
- -0.25 is half on 0 and half on -0.5.
- -0.75 is half on -0.5 and half on -1.
- -1.25 is half on -1 and half on -1.5.
- +0.25 is half on 0 and half on +0.5.
- +0.75 is half on +0.5 and half on +1.
For these examples, say you stake RM40 at decimal odds of 1.95. Each half is RM20, and a winning half earns RM19 profit (RM20 × 0.95). A full win earns RM38.
-0.25 and +0.25
Team A -0.25, RM40 at 1.95
- A wins: both halves win, RM38 profit.
- Draw: the 0 half is refunded and the -0.5 half loses, a half loss of RM20.
- A loses: both halves lose, a loss of RM40.
Team B +0.25, RM40 at 1.95
- B wins: both halves win, RM38 profit.
- Draw: the 0 half is refunded and the +0.5 half wins, a half win of RM19 profit.
- B loses: both halves lose, a loss of RM40.
-0.75 and +0.75
Team A -0.75, RM40 at 1.95
- A wins by 2 or more: both halves win, RM38 profit.
- A wins by exactly 1: the -0.5 half wins and the -1 half is refunded, a half win of RM19 profit.
- Draw or A loses: both halves lose, a loss of RM40.
Team B +0.75, RM40 at 1.95
- B wins or draws: both halves win, RM38 profit.
- B loses by exactly 1: the +0.5 half loses and the +1 half is refunded, a half loss of RM20.
- B loses by 2 or more: both halves lose, a loss of RM40.
-1.25, -1.75 and beyond
The method works on every quarter line. At -1.25, a one-goal win is a half loss, because the -1 half is refunded and the -1.5 half loses, while a two-goal win is a full win. At -1.75, a two-goal win is a half win and a three-goal win is a full win.
Asian handicap compared with 1X2
Both markets can back the same team, but they ask different questions.
- The draw. In 1X2 the draw is an outcome of its own. On handicap lines it is either removed (half lines) or turned into a refund (level ball and whole lines).
- Matching bets. Some lines settle exactly like familiar markets. -0.5 is the same bet as that team to win in 1X2. +0.5 is the same as a double chance on that team to win or draw. Level ball is the same as draw no bet.
- Price. When one team is much stronger, its 1X2 price can be short. At 1.30, a RM100 stake returns RM130, a RM30 profit. A line such as -1.5 asks the favourite to win by two instead, and handicap lines are set so that both sides are priced close to even money, around 2.00 in decimal. Neither choice is better by default: the handicap changes the question, not the bookmaker's margin.
- Comparing prices. Because -0.5 and the 1X2 win settle the same way, you can compare their prices directly once both are in decimal. The higher price pays more for exactly the same result.
Over/under lines follow the same rules
Totals markets use the same half, whole and quarter logic, applied to the goals scored by both teams together instead of the margin between them.
Over 2.5, a half line: three goals or more wins, two or fewer loses. There is no push.
Over 2, a whole line
- Three goals or more: win.
- Exactly two goals: push, stake returned.
- One goal or none: loss.
Over 2.25, RM40 at 1.95 (half on over 2, half on over 2.5)
- Three goals or more: both halves win, RM38 profit.
- Exactly two goals: the over 2 half is refunded and the over 2.5 half loses, a half loss of RM20.
- One goal or none: a loss of RM40.
Over 2.75, RM40 at 1.95 (half on over 2.5, half on over 3)
- Four goals or more: both halves win, RM38 profit.
- Exactly three goals: the over 2.5 half wins and the over 3 half is refunded, a half win of RM19 profit.
- Two goals or fewer: a loss of RM40.
Under bets mirror these results. Under 2.75, for example, wins in full with two goals or fewer and is a half loss on exactly three.
Before you place a handicap bet
- Check which goals count. A pre-match handicap bet is settled on the whole match. In play, many sportsbooks count only the goals scored after your bet is accepted, so a match already at 1–0 starts at 0–0 for your bet. The market rules say which applies.
- Read the bet slip. It shows the line, the price and the potential return before you confirm. Lines and prices move, so check them again if you pause.
- Remember the margin. Handicap lines make a mismatch look like an even contest, but both sides are priced below fair value, and that gap is the bookmaker's margin. Our odds guide shows the arithmetic.
- Set your stake before kick-off. Half losses soften a bad result; they do not remove it. Keep to a budget and use the limits and breaks described on our responsible gaming page.

Frequently asked questions
What does 0/0.5 mean on a handicap line?
It is a quarter line written as the two lines it combines: -0.25 for the team giving the start, +0.25 for the team receiving it. Your stake is split in half, with one half on level ball and the other on the half-goal line.
Does extra time count in Asian handicap?
Normally not. Football handicap bets are usually settled on the score after normal time, including stoppage time; extra time and penalties are left out unless the market says otherwise. Check the market rules before you bet.
Is a push the same as a loss?
No. A push returns your whole stake, so your balance is back where it was before the bet. It happens on level ball and whole-goal lines when the adjusted score is level.
How is -0.25 different from -0.5?
Both win in full if your team wins. The difference is the draw: at -0.5 a draw loses the whole stake, at -0.25 only half, because the other half sits on level ball and is refunded. In return, -0.25 usually pays a slightly lower price.
